I really like the natural and realistic look of the background, and how the blues and yellow-gray of the sand contrast the green in the foreground. 
(gee, I enjoy these, thank you!) That's an interesting point, greens can indeed make or break your picture. I think if all of the bamboo would have been green (instead of making some of them brownish or yellowish) they would have severely affected its balance and the "message" I was trying to convey.
